Review Dropbox offline files as device-resident copies
Dropbox states that available-offline files are stored on the device as well as online. Changes made offline wait to sync until connectivity returns, creating a period where versions can differ.
A contractor makes a project folder available offline before travel, then returns the shared PC. The owner waits for sync, confirms the green status, changes unnecessary material to online-only and checks for separately exported files.
Run the control in five steps
- 01Confirm the Dropbox account and current sync status.
- 02Identify folders marked available offline or selected for local sync.
- 03Reconnect and wait for offline edits to finish syncing.
- 04Change unnecessary copies to online-only after validation.
- 05Inspect exports, application caches and recycle locations separately.
Preserve an accountable test record
Keep Dropbox account, local folder, status icon, offline edits, reconnect time, sync completion, cleanup action and reviewer.
Stop and investigate when
- The PC is reassigned while Dropbox is still syncing.
- Available offline is described as cloud-only.
- Selective sync is confused with removal of exported copies.
State what the control does not prove
Cloud Secure protects PC-side cloud-sync folder access, not Google/Dropbox/OneDrive provider-side TLS, E2EE or share permissions. Verify provider sharing, locally resident copies, Windows access and recovery separately.
Cloud-folder privacy questions
Do offline changes sync immediately?
No. Dropbox syncs them after the device reconnects.
Does making a file online-only remove every copy?
No. Separately downloaded or exported copies must be reviewed.
